Bath-based Deep Blue Sky’s Web Innovation Awards have continued to gather momentum, with individuals and businesses from across the globe vying to win the prize £10,000 for the most innovative idea for the web.
The company launched their competition, in which one lucky person or organisation can win £10,000 worth of cutting edge web design and hosting, in February. The uptake worldwide has been impressive, with entries coming in from as far afield as South Africa, the USA and Australia.
The Awards are the brainchild of Managing Director Jim Morrison, who wanted to promote and stimulate innovative thought in regards to the internet.
The company itself is no stranger to innovation - in 2008 it launched www.cheddarvision.tv – a website which drew nearly 2million visitors wanting to catch a glimpse of a block of cheese maturing at a West Country farm.
The Web Innovation Awards are open to any individual or organisation with an original idea. Jim Morrison explains, “We wanted to do something that would break down some boundaries and allow people to think in an open way about what they would like to see on the net. By offering £10,000 worth of design we’re allowing people to let their imaginations run wild – and from some of the entries we’ve had already it’s definitely working.”
In modern business innovation is important, as Simon Bond from Bath’s Innovation Centre explains, “Innovation is certainly key for a lot of successful companies. In the modern business world a unique and groundbreaking idea can put you ahead of the competition overnight and get your name or brand recognised by millions.”
“This is what we encourage at the Innovation Centre and the Web Innovation Awards are a great catalyst for this type of thinking. It’s a chance for people to be as creative as they want and make that off-the-wall idea become the next big thing on the internet.”
The winning idea itself will remain the intellectual property of the winner and Deep Blue Sky will facilitate the website construction to bring the idea to life.
Jim Morrison added, “It’s a very exciting project. We’ve had entries in from all sorts of people and businesses, and there have been some very interesting suggestions so far. We’re hoping for many more original ideas before the closing date. We already know it will be a difficult job picking a winner.”
Entries to the Web Innovation Awards can be made online at www.awardingideas.com and the closing date for entries is midnight on 24th May 2010. The winner will be notified by 31st May and work will begin to bring the idea to life over the summer months.
